SAN FRANCISCO (October 26, 2018) – Michelle Obama and Live Nation have announced a selection of the local and community organizations who will receive free admission to the former First Lady’s highly anticipated upcoming book tour, Becoming: An Intimate Conversation With Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama’s tour kicks off on November 13th in Chicago and include a stop at the SAP Center in San Jose on Friday, December 14th.
As previously announced, 10 percent of ticket inventory in each market was set aside for various local organizations including, but not limited to, local charities, schools, and community groups in each city the tour visits.

It is important to Mrs. Obama that her BECOMING tour events are accessible to as many people as possible. That’s why — in partnership with Live Nation — Mrs. Obama is giving away thousands of complimentary tickets to people around the country, particularly to young people growing up in communities like she did.

When asked about why these community tickets are so important to Mrs. Obama, she said
.
“It was important to me that all sorts of people could come to the tour events, not just those with means or who happened to be by a computer when the tickets went on sale. That’s why we are giving away thousands of tickets to people around the country, particularly to young people striving to be their best. I want them to see themselves in my story-to see the value in the fullness of their lives and to imagine who they might become in the years ahead.”

Several of the groups also released their own videos of young people getting the news including: The Telling Room, 826DC, Riverside County Schools, The Chica Project, LA Metropolitan Debate League,Chicago Debates, Washington Urban Debate League, TheDream.US, and Harvard Graduate School of Education, among others.

The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) is a national non-profit organization that prepares low income students of color to succeed in college and in their future careers by organizing and supporting competitive debate teams in urban public schools across the country.

Girl Scouts is the largest girl-serving organization in the United States, builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Chicago CRED (Creating Real Economic Destiny) was created in 2016 to achieve a transformative reduction in Chicago gun violence. Their bold, research-based intervention strategy addresses the social, emotional and job readiness support to place program participants in permanent, full-time jobs.

Bottom Line addresses the low college graduation rates of low-income and first-generation students. By providing consistent one-on-one support, Bottom Line has helped thousands of stay in college and complete their degrees.

Riverside County (CA) Office of Education has expanded its efforts to help underserved students prepare for, enroll in, and ultimately graduate from a postsecondary institution. As a result, Riverside County’s graduation rates, college enrollment, and FAFSA completion rates are among the very best in the state of California.

826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

The Chica Project creates a pipeline of intergenerational Latina leaders connected through mentoring, leadership development and community empowerment activities; while also impacting their development at various points of their professional and personal journey. The Telling Room empowers youth through writing and encouraging them to share their voices with the world. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students.

beGirl.world (bGw) is a Philadelphia based organization that empowers teenage girls through global education and travel. bGw challenges girls to think beyond their neighborhood, dream bigger than their city limits, and create possibilities outside their country borders.

The Lower Eastside Girls Club (LESGC) connects girls and young women to healthy and successful futures. The center offers a safe haven with programs in the arts, sciences, leadership, entrepreneurship, and wellness for middle and high school girls. Programs are offered at no cost to girls and their families.

Democracy Prep Public Schools was born with the goal of ensuring that every single student would “Work Hard, Go to College, and Change the World!” Their mission is to educate responsible citizen-scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship.

Mercy Education Project’s mission is to provide educational opportunities, life skills development and cultural enrichment for women and girls who have limited access to resources to enable them to improve the quality of their lives.
