UCSC Opera presents “The Magic Flute”
Opera at UC Santa Cruz!
UCSC singers and orchestra come together to present a fully-staged production of one of the great works of the operatic canon. Mozart wrote this two-act comic opera near the end of his life, and it premiered in 1791 at the rustic Vienna theater of Emanuel Schikaneder, the work’s librettist and originator of the role of ‘Papageno.’
The UC Santa Cruz Music Department’s production—featuring costume design in collaboration with Academy of Arts University and sets and lighting by Legend Theatrical—explores themes of chaos, order, and the natural world. Bruce Kiesling conducts the UCSC orchestra and singers, and Sheila Willey directs. Sung in German with English dialogues and English supertitles.
Audience notification: strobe lighting effects are used in this production.
