SALINAS, CA, September 25, 2018- Enthusiastic public response to the MEGA Body experience has Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) bringing back the unique educational resource for a third time to the California International Airshow Salinas. MEGA Body is a 50 foot long, 15 feet wide and 12 feet high inflatable walk-through interactive exhibit of the human body designed to teach people about the risks and causes of diseases. MEGA Body will be featured in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Runway at the Salinas Municipal Airport on Saturday and Sunday.

“The action will not just be up in the sky it will be on the STEM Runway,” says Pete Delgado, President/CEO of Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. “The students will enter through MEGA Body’s mouth and hear presentations by our physicians and registered nurses regarding how the brain, heart, lungs and digestive system work.”

“The students will learn that many diseases are preventable,” says Oscar Gantes, MD, a family medicine physician at the Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center in Gonzales. “This is a great opportunity for healthcare providers to talk to children about the benefits of eating healthy and exercising. It allows people to see how lifestyle choices and habits can impact the health of various organs. It’s also a lot of fun for the students and the volunteers.”

Approximately 450 elementary school students from Salinas, North County, San Ardo, Gonzales, Chualar, Soledad, Greenfield and King City will be taking tours of the exhibits on the STEM Runway including guided tours of MEGA Body.

“Salinas Valley Memorial shares our enthusiasm for getting young students to think about careers in science, technology, engineering and math,” says Don Chapin III, President of the California International Airshow Salinas. “The community service piece is an important part of the Airshow mission and we’re fortunate to have partners who support us in that effort.”

For the first time in the Airshow’s history, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) are participating in the STEM Runway providing interactive exhibits focused on the preservations of our oceans. Other exhibits being featured include hands on activities on the respiratory system, the solar system, chemistry, math, physics, engineering and automotive all of which are being made possible by Hartnell College. The tours take place Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:30 am and ending at 11:00 am. The STEM Runway opens to the public at noon. It is located next to the Kids Zone at the Salinas Municipal Airport.
