Youth Music Monterey County celebrates the beautiful fall season with its 2019-20 premier concert. Under the leadership of YMMC’s new Music Director Danko Druško, the Junior Youth and Honors Orchestras present brilliant orchestral works performed by our community’s most talented young musicians in Carmel’s Sunset Center Theater. Members of the Junior Youth & Honors Orchestras hail from over 25 schools across Monterey County.
The first half of the concert features the intense Overture from The Abduction from the Seraglio by Mozart, a charming arrangements of Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and Ippolitov-Ivanov’s vibrant and dignified Procession of the Sardar. Taking her solo turn as a winner of the JYO Concerto Competition, 13-year old York student and violinist Rose Finn performs the first movement of the Seitz Violin Concerto #2 with the Junior Youth orchestra.
The Honors Orchestra takes the stage on the second half of the concert. Opening with the Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms, it sparkles with his renowned orchestral technique and was described by him as “a very boisterous potpourri of student drinking songs à la Suppé.” It was written in tribute to the University of Breslau which had just bestowed an honorary doctorate on him.
The other works present two late 19th century composers’ impressions of Spain, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Emmanuel Chabrier. España, by French composer Chabrier, is a rapturous and joyous work that received an encore performance at its premier. He described it as an “extraordinary fantasia.” Listeners won’t want to miss the stunning virtuosity of Capriccio Espagnol, by Russian composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, which incorporates festive and energetic dances from the Asturian region of northern Spain, the alborado and fandango. It features brief virtuoso solo cadenzas for solo instruments including violin, clarinet, flute, and harp and rousing rhythmic elements from the percussion section.
YMMC Is excited to introduce its new music director, Danko Druško, to the greater community.
“It has been a great pleasure working with YMM these past few months in my first season as music director. We have made wonderful progress on a challenging program and the students have done an incredible job in a short amount of time. I am excited for the community to see and hear these talented groups and look forward to what is to come in the future.”
