The National Steinbeck Center provides financial assistance to dozens of young students in Monterey County to further their education

THE NATIONAL STEINBECK CENTER PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO DOZENS OF YOUNG STUDENTS IN MONTEREY COUNTY TO FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION

SALINAS, CA – The National Steinbeck Center continues its longstanding tradition of investing in our community’s youth and their education, and recently awarded $1,350 in scholarships to middle school students as part of their award-winning Steinbeck Young Authors Program. Additionally, they also awarded $2,250 to 3 local high school seniors to further their education through our Steinbeck Young Authors Writing Contest. And with the support of the California Arts Council and the Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation, they will also be awarding 45 full scholarships to local youth for their upcoming ‘Steinbeck Expedition Virtual Summer Camps 2020’.

At the ‘Steinbeck Expedition Virtual Summer Camps 2020’,  campers from ages 5 to 17 will be inspired by the life and works of John Steinbeck while exploring the creative worlds of literature, arts, and sciences through these innovative camps. The campers will be able to activate their creativity through engaging activities led by our community field experts in the arts and sciences and they will be provided with the right tools to create their own field journal and reflect on their personal experiences and communities.

The ‘Steinbeck Expedition Virtual Summer Camps 2020’ will feature the following topics of discovery: Ecology, Marine Biology, Visual Arts, Creative Writing, Field Journalism and Theater Arts. The camps will include: live Q&A sessions with their camp guides and experts, exclusive video content from community experts in the arts and sciences, engaging learning modules, a Virtual S.T.E.A.M. Toolkit, virtual tours and more. The aforementioned community experts include: Artists Ink Theater Group, Elkhorn Slough, Monterey Bay Air Resources District, a renowned National Geographic Photographer, Urban Arts Collaborative artists, CSUMB Science Illustration instructors, California-based authors, visiting scholar Dr. David Wrobel and more.

After completing the Steinbeck Expedition Camps, campers will come away feeling empowered and equipped with the tools to further their creative aspirations. Furthermore, they will have gained a deeper understanding of their abilities to communicate, empathize, and be the leaders of their own journeys.
